Top of Texas Rural Fire Academy Dedicates Kathy Ryan Facility
Students and instructors from the Top of Texas Rural Fire Academy were joined by members of the Kathy Ryan family at the dedication of the Kathy Ryan Facility in Canadian, Texas on Saturday, May 21, 2011. As a result of a grant from the Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment, the Top of Texas Rural Fire Academy was able to purchase this facility which will enable affordable fire and rescue instruction in the Texas Panhandle.
The Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment was created to honor the heroism of Kathy Ryan, a 64 year old grandmother from Borger who lost her life while attempting to rescue her elderly neighbors during the March 12, 2006 Borger Wildfire. The Endowment supports training for rural volunteer fire and rescue personnel from throughout the Texas Panhandle.

The Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment was in the news recently as they remind the public of the importance of supporting our rural fire and rescue personnel in the Texas Panhandle. The Endowment was established to honor the bravery of Kathy Ryan, a Borger grandmother, who lost her life in the March 12, 2006 Borger Wildfire, while trying to rescue her elderly neighbors. Her children and the law firm ofLovell, Lovell, Newsom & Isern, L.L.P. wanted to honor her heroism and support fire and rescue personnel in the Texas Panhandle.
The Endowment provides scholarships to first responders in the rural Texas Panhandle for training. Applicants must be a current member, volunteer, or employee of a recognized fire or rescue organization in the rural Texas Panhandle (defined as the Northernmost 24 counties in Northwest Texas, excluding Potter and Randall Counties). Jake Minton, President of the Rotary Club of Borger, welcomed Pamela Ryan Ayers and Joe L. Lovell as speakers at Tuesday luncheon. Pam Ayers and Joe Lovell spoke on behalf of the Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment. The goal of the endowment is to provide support for training of volunteer fire and rescue personnel in the rural Texas Panhandle.

Joe L. Lovell of Lovell, Lovell, Newsom & Isern, L.L.P is scheduled to speak on behalf of the Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment fund on May 3, 2011 at the Rotary Club of Borger. The speech is scheduled to start at 12:00 P.M.
March 12, 2011 Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment Announces Grant
The Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment Fund announced a grant award to the Top of Texas Rural Fire Academy. The academy was developed through a grant from FEMA with required matching funds from the Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment Fund. Founder of the academy, Ron Antalek, as well as instructors, participants and representatives of area fire departments were present for the announcement.

The sacrifice of one brave woman has lead to an increase of more than 200% of volunteer firefighters, all made possible by the financial support of the Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment Fund. Ryan died in the Borger Wildfires of 2006 while attempting to rescue her elderly neighbors. A fund in her name established by her children and the law firm of Lovell, Lovell, Newsom & Isern wanted to honor her heroism and support fire and rescue personnel in the Panhandle with the establishment of the fund. The Kathy Ryan Endowment helped establish the Top of Texas Fire Academy which had its first class graduation on March 12, 2011.

Fund Established to Honor a True Texas Hero
In honor of Kathy Ryan the Borger grandmother who lost her life while trying to rescue her elderly neighbors during the 2006 Borger Wildfires. The Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Endowment fund was established by Kathy Ryan's children, Pam Ayers, Tony Griffin and Don Ryan and the law firm of Lovell, Lovell, Newsom & Isern, L.L.P. The fund was established to provide scholarship grants for fire and rescue training or education of fire and rescue personnel in the rural Texas Panhandle. Volunteer firefighters protect more than 27,000 square miles in the Texas Panhandle. Often the firefighters pay out of pocket for training. The risk their lives to stand up and protect their friends, neighbors and communities.
